PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team continues its exciting 2022 home schedule when the No. 19 Panthers host No. 6 Arizona State at Fitzgerald Field House on Friday night.
Tickets for the 7 p.m. dual are available on PittsburghPanthers.com.
The contest will also be streamed on ACC Network Extra and via the ESPN app, with Greg Warnock on the play-by-play alongside analysts and former Pitt wrestlers Anthony Zanetta and Kellan Stout.
Head coach Keith Gavin has embraced hosting some of the nation's top-ranked teams, which will help prepare Pitt for the postseason once again after the Panthers excelled in March last year.
Following last Sunday's match with No. 3 Michigan, the visit of No. 6 Arizona State is the second of four top-10 matchups at Fitzgerald Field House this season. No. 5 NC State (Feb. 11) and No. 8 Virginia Tech (Jan. 28) are also slated to visit the Panthers, ranked No. 19 in the NWCA Coaches Poll this week.
Friday's dual with the Sun Devils (3-1, 0-0 Pac-12) will likely showcase five ranked individual matchups.
Probables for both teams are available in the Pitt wrestling match notes.
Leading the Panthers (4-3, 0-0 ACC) into battle against Arizona State are seven ranked wrestlers.
Ranked in the top-10 by InterMat this week, No. 7 Micky Phillippi and No. 9 Nino Bonaccorsi pace the Pitt lineup at 133 and 197 pounds, respectively. ACC Wrestler of the Week Cole Matthews (No. 22 at 141 pounds) has been on a tear in recent matches.
No. 21 Elijah Cleary and No. 13 Jake Wentzel, at 157 and 165 pounds, will compete in crucial contests that could determine the outcome of Friday's enticing dual at Fitzgerald Field House.
Also ranked for the Panthers, No. 31 Gregg Harvey at 184 pounds and No. 32 Gage Curry at 125 pounds will be seeking resume-boosting victories as the college wrestling season heads into its stretch run.
Pitt and Arizona State haven't met in wrestling since 1996 when the Sun Devils won a close dual, 18-12. ASU leads the all-time series on the mat against the Panthers, 3-1.
In his fifth season leading the Panthers, Coach Gavin will be looking for his ninth dual win over a ranked opponent and hopes a rowdy atmosphere at Fitzgerald Field House can help Pitt pull the upset.
