Outside Hitter Named Program’s First National Volleyball Player of the Week
LEXINGTON, Ky. / GREENSBORO, N.C. – Graduate outside hitter Kayla Lund of the No. 4 Pitt volleyball team (5-0, 0-0 ACC) made history as the program's first student-athlete to earn National Player of the Week honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), as announced Tuesday.
In addition to her national accolades, Lund was named the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Co-Player of the Week alongside junior middle blocker Marina Markova of Syracuse. The honors are Lund's first of the season and the seventh of her career (already a program record).
Lund led the Panthers to thrilling back-to-back five-set wins against No. 9 Baylor and Tennessee over the weekend, helping the Panthers reach a 5-0 overall record. The outside hitter led Pitt with 40 kills over the 10 sets played, amounting to 4.00 kills per set on .337 hitting.
Against the Bears (Sept. 4) Lund had a season-high 21 kills, including the match winner, while hitting a season-best .432. The following match, she recorded her third double-double of Pitt's five matches played with 19 kills and 11 digs on the road at Tennessee (Sept. 5). Overall, she averaged 2.00 digs, 0.50 assists and 0.20 blocks per frame over the Panthers' two wins.
Pitt volleyball's home schedule kicks off with the annual Panther Classic Friday and Saturday at Fitzgerald Field House. The Panthers will host High Point, No. 12 BYU and Bowling Green, respectively. Each match will be streamed on ACC Network Extra and tickets are available through PittsburghPanthers.com.
