PITTSBURGH – Pitt women's basketball associate head coach Terri Mitchell and assistant coach Brianna Kiesel will be inducted into two different Hall of Fames next week. Mitchell earned the nod for the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame while Kiesel will join the Greater Utica Sports Hall of Fame.
"It's so fun to see two of our coaches receive Hall of Fame inductions to honor their careers in basketball," said head coach Lance White. "I love that our team gets to learn from these amazing Hall of Fame coaches every day."
The Hall of Fame Banquet to honor Mitchell and others is scheduled for Saturday, September 25 at the Glacier Canyon Lodge of the Wilderness Resort in Wisconsin Dells. Kiesel will be honored during banquet at Delta Hotels by Marriott in Utica on Sunday, September 26.
"I am honored to get to work with Terri Mitchell," stated White. "Anyone who knows her knows her induction into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame is well deserved."
A Wisconsin coaching legend, Mitchell spent 18 seasons (1996-2014) at the helm of the Marquette Golden Eagles women's basketball program and is one of two college coaches to earn the recognition this year. During her outstanding tenure, Mitchell became the programs all-time winningest head coach as she amassed an impressive 348 wins while leading the Golden Eagles to 15 postseason appearances.
Mitchell earned conference coach of the year honors three times while at Marquette – Conference USA (1998, 2000) and Big East (2007). She also led the Golden Eagles to 20 or more wins 10 times while making seven NCAA Tournament appearances and eight trips to the WNIT, including the 2008 WNIT title.
"It is an honor to be inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame," expressed Mitchell. "This induction is truly a reflection of the dedicated staff and amazing players I surrounded myself with at Marquette University. We achieved many great and memorable things during my time there and it was all because of the passion, commitment, and hard work of those that were a part of my program. It was a privilege being the head coach of Marquette women's basketball and I will always cherish that special time in my heart."
Kiesel enjoyed an outstanding playing career at Proctor High School in Utica where she turned into an All-State performer and leader. She finished off her senior campaign averaging 22.8 ppg while leading her squad to a 16-3 record and their first appearance in the Section III final in school history. The dynamic guard shattered the school record for points (1,723), assists (479) and steals (394) at Proctor high school despite missing most of her junior season due to injury.
"Bri's basketball accolades speak for themselves and for her to get to add "Hall of Famer" to that list is amazing," said White.
Following high school, she moved on to Pitt where she became one of the greats in program history before being drafted into the WNBA and enjoying a six-year professional playing career.
The skilled point guard capped her amazing Pitt career as the Panthers' all-time leader in minutes played while ranking third in free throw percentage (79.5%), fifth in points (1,938), fifth in assists (433) and eighth in steals (198). She is still the only player in program history to accumulate at least 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 400 assists while also being the only player to lead the team in scoring and assists in four straight seasons. The prolific scorer also posted 42 games with 20+ points scored across her career. She was named a WBCA Region 2 All-America nominee, a First Team All-ACC performer, as well as being named to the All-ACC Defensive Team and ACC All-Academic Team following her strong senior campaign.
"I couldn't feel more blessed to be amongst other Utica greats," stated Kiesel. "It's a huge honor to be looked at as someone who is deserving to be there. I am proud to be from my hometown of Utica, NY. My city, my people and my family have helped me achieve more than I ever thought would be possible."
The Panthers 2021-22 campaign is set to begin Wednesday, November 10 as they welcome Radford to the Petersen Events Center for a non-conference battle.
