
No. 9 Pitt Sweeps South Carolina to Win Carolina Classic

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 9 Pitt volleyball team (3-0, 0-0 ACC) handed host South Carolina (2-1, 0-0 SEC) its first loss as the Panthers earned the Carolina Classic title Saturday night at the Carolina Volleyball Center.
Pitt swept the Gamecocks by scores of 25-16, 25-16, 25-23 to go a perfect 3-0 to start the 2021 season.
The victory marked ninth-year head coach Dan Fisher's 200th win at Pitt. He holds a record of 200-54 (.787) at the helm of the Panthers.
Transfer middle blocker Serena Gray had a productive evening with nine kills on .429 hitting to go along with a career high-tying seven blocks.
Outside hitter Kayla Lund and right side Chinaza Ndee also contributed nine kills apiece. Lund had a match-high 11 digs for a near double-double. Ndee hit .300 on the night, which included a match point kill, with six blocks.
Utility player Jordan Lockwood contributed five kills off the bench on .364 hitting with two blocks. Outside hitter Valeria Vazquez Gomez produced five kills in her first start of the season.
Pitt had the advantage in kills (41-28), assists (39-28), service aces (6-2), digs (35-25), and blocks (13.0-6.0). The Panthers out-hit the Gamecocks, .286-.103.
SET ONE: No. 9 Pitt 25, South Carolina 16
Pitt had a solid start to the match, gaining a 13-9 lead after a 5-1 run, including back-to-back Gray kills. The Panthers stayed consistent offensively and ended the frame on a dominant 7-1 run, earning a 25-16 victory in the frame. Gray contributed six kills and four blocks in the stanza while Pitt hit .303 as a team.
SET TWO: No. 9 Pitt 25, South Carolina 16
It was more of the same in the second set for Pitt, as the Panthers gained and early lead and didn't look back. A 6-1 run gave Pitt a 16-11 advantage, and then later, a 3-0 run pushed the margin to 19-13. The Panthers held the Gamecocks to just .042 for the set.
SET THREE: No. 9 Pitt 25, South Carolina 23
Despite a 7-2 momentum shift that gave Pitt a 14-11 lead, the Gamecocks stayed close. Pitt earned match point on a 3-1 run, going up 24-20, but South Carolina was able to rattle off three points to make it 24-23. Ndee silenced the side with a kill to end it, 25-23.

No rest for the weary as No. 9 Pitt will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for matches against No. 10 Baylor and host (RV) Tennessee Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 4-5, at Thompson-Boling Arena.
