SCHEDULE HIGHLIGHTS
With three ACC championships in the last four years, Pitt will look to continue its dominance against formidable competition this season, with 12 matches against the reduced field of 48 participants from the 2020 NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship. The 12 matches include three fellow Sweet 16 teams that also reached the 2020 Regional Semifinal Round: Baylor (Sept. 4, neutral), BYU (Sept. 10, home) and Louisville (Oct. 24, away and Nov. 24, home).
OPPONENTS IN THE 2020 NCAA TOURNAMENT
Seven opponents ended the 2020 season ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25. Morehead State (Sept. 17, away) received four points in the final 2020 poll. Pitt completed the 2020 season with its highest final ranking in program history at No. 8.
Pitt will host 12 regular season matches at historic Fitzgerald Field House, where the Panthers hold a 337-103 (.785) record entering their 40th season playing at the facility. Pitt is 50-2 (.962) at the Field House since the start of the 2017 season.
The Panthers' 2021 home schedule begins with the annual Panther Challenge, when Pitt will welcome three 2020 NCAA Tournament participants in High Point (Sept. 10), BYU (Sept. 10) and Bowling Green (Sept. 11).
Pitt will kick off home ACC play with Virginia (Sept. 29) and Duke (Oct. 10) before hosting Volleyball Alumnae Weekend with matches against Clemson (Oct. 8) and Georgia Tech (Oct. 10). The Panthers will host another four-match homestand against Wake Forest (Oct. 29), Virginia Tech (Oct. 31), Syracuse (Nov. 5) and Boston College (Nov. 7). Pitt will close the regular season against defending ACC champion Louisville (Nov. 24).
RETURNING FOR PITT
Pitt returns 98.1 percent of its kill output from the 2020 season, including AVCA All-America Second Team selections Kayla Lund and Chinaza Ndee. Lund, an outside hitter, made history as the ACC's first two-time Volleyball Player of the Year, in addition to repeating as AVCA East Coast Region Player of the Year. Ndee was one of 10 finalists for the national Senior CLASS Award in addition to being named the ACC Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Lund and Ndee combined for 50.5 percent of Pitt's kills in 2020.
AVCA All-America Honorable Mention Chiamaka Nwokolo is back for her junior season in the middle for Pitt, alongside fellow star blocker and rising senior Sabrina Starks, who landed on the All-ACC Second Team and ranked seventh in the nation with 116 total blocks last season.
NEW PANTHERS
Pitt stacked its deck this spring with transfers Serena Gray (Penn State) and Leketor Member-Meneh (Missouri).
Gray will arrive in Pittsburgh following three years as a standout middle blocker, starting all three of her seasons as a Nittany Lion and receiving All-America accolades in 2018 and 2019. The 6-foot-2 native of Temple City, Calif., will have two seasons of immediate eligibility as a Panther.
Member-Meneh played three seasons as an outside hitter at Missouri (2017-19) with one year of eligibility remaining. During her time as a Tiger, the St. Louis, Mo., native garnered All-SEC honors (2018) in addition to an SEC All-Freshman selection (2017).
Incoming talent includes freshmen Rachel Fairbanks (setter – Tustin, Calif.), Makayla Jackson (middle blocker – Plum, Pa.), Emmy Klika (libero/defensive specialist – Novelty, Ohio) and Eliana Posada (right side – Houston, Texas).
