PITTSBURGH -- The University of Pittsburgh men's basketball team will host Minnesota at the Petersen Events Center Tuesday, Nov. 30 as part of the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Game time and television designation will be announced at a later date.
"We are excited about the opportunity to compete against Minnesota in a home ACC/Big Ten Challenge game this season," said head coach Jeff Capel. "Coach Johnson has an outstanding reputation and will be looking to really establish his culture in his first year at the head coach at Minnesota. We look forward to the opportunity to host another Power 5 opponent in non-conference play."
Pitt returns the backcourt trio of Ithiel Horton (8.9 ppg. – 43 3FG), Nike Sibande (6.9 ppg. - .436 3FG PCT) and Femi Odukale (6.6 ppg., 2.5 rpg., 2.2 apg.) along with promosing sophomore forwards John Hugley (5.1 ppg., 4.3 rpg.), William Jeffress and Noah Collier along with center Max Amadasun.
The Panthers have also added five newcomers to the 2021-22 roster in transfers Mouhamadou Gueye (Stony Brook), Jamarius Burton (Wichita State/Texas Tech), Dan Oladapo (Oakland), along with junior college addition Chris Payton (Indian Hills JC) and prep school standout Nate Santos.
Pitt is 2-1 all-time against the Gophers but the two teams have not squared off since the 1950-51 season.
The Panthers are 4-3 all-time in ACC/Big Ten Challenge games, including a 1-2 mark in home contests. Pitt has won its past two challenge contests including a dramatic come-from-behind 71-70 victory at Northwestern last season. Sophomore Justin Champagnie burst onto the national scene with 20 points and 20 rebounds to go along with a game-winning dunk in the final seconds of play.
Pitt is joined by Georgia Tech and Miami as the only ACC schools to post wins in each of the past two ACC/Big Ten Challenges.
The ACC has a 12-7-3 edge in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge with wins in each of the first 10 years of the event. The Big Ten claimed last year's challenge with an 7-5 record as a pair of contests were cancelled due to COVID-19 issues.
Season tickets for Pitt Basketball are now on sale through the Panther Ticket Office.
Pitt's full 2021-22 schedule will be announced in the fall. The Panthers are expected to host Duke, Virginia, Louisville, Syracuse, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, NC State, Miami and Boston College in conference play.
