Serena Gray Transfers from Penn State to Pitt
PITTSBURGH – Two-time American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-America Honorable Mention Serena Gray will transfer to Pitt, head coach Dan Fisher announced Thursday.
"I'm beyond excited to announce this," Fisher said. "Serena [Gray] is one of the top players in the country and we expect her to have an immediate impact here at Pitt. It was the right fit for her culturally and academically. We're thrilled that she's joining us in Pittsburgh."
Gray will arrive in Pittsburgh following three years as a standout middle blocker at Penn State. She started all three of her seasons as a Nittany Lion and received All-America accolades in 2018 and 2019. With Gray on the roster, Penn State reached the NCAA Regional Final twice (2018, 2019) and the Semifinal once (2020).
The 6-foot-2 native of Temple City, Calif., will have two seasons of immediate eligibility as a Panther.
This past season, Gray started all but one match for PSU at middle blocker, contributing 2.09 kills and 0.79 blocks per set. As a sophomore in 2019, she was second for Penn State in kills (317), kills per set (2.71), aces (34), blocks (92) and blocks per set (0.79).
Prior to her time in State College, Gray was ranked the No. 5 PrepVolleyball.com Senior Ace in 2018. She was as a member of the 2016 U.S. Youth National Training Team and competed for the same club volleyball program as future Pitt teammate Kayla Lund: SG Elite.
Gray joins a talented group of incoming Panthers, including graduate transfer Leketor Member-Meneh (Missouri), in addition to four freshmen: setter Rachel Fairbanks, middle blocker Makayla Jackson, libero Emmy Klika and right side hitter Eliana Posada. More information on the incoming freshman class can be found at PittsburghPanthers.com.
