EUGENE, OR – The men's 4x400m relay team saw their successful 2020-21 campaign come to an end on Wednesday night in the national semifinals as they placed 18th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, OR at the historic Hayward Field. The quartet earned Honorable Mention All-American honors for their strong performance.
"After a very challenging year for our guys, I was proud of how much they accomplished and how far they've come," said head coach Alonzo Webb. "This was the first time that all five of them had qualified for and traveled to the NCAA Championship meet. Although it was not the outcome that we were expecting, they were competitive with the top teams in the nation and gained valuable experience to build upon."
The Panthers quartet of Ade Jones-Roundtree, Lonzell Feagin, Matt Wilson and Cobe Wiggins ran a strong race in the opening heat of the night as they took seventh place, crossing the finish line in 3:09.97. Overall, Pitt finished in 18th place in the field of 24 talented relay squads from around the country.
Pitt had a strong start in the event as Jones-Roundtree and Feagin ran strong legs to get the Panthers into the fourth position and in striking distance for an automatic qualifying time to the finals. A couple squads finished strong to push Pitt to seventh in the opening heat, the second fastest of the three heats.
"I usually don't point out individuals on a relay but I think that Lonzell needs to be recognized for the outstanding second leg that he ran, just as he did at the ACC Championships," said Webb.
They earned Honorable Mention All-American status for the first time in their careers. The four All-Americans are the most for the Panthers since 2016 when they had five earn the national recognition. They are also just the third men's relay squad in program history to be named All-American.
The relay squad wraps up their impressive campaign with a season-best time of 3:06.92, the fifth fastest time in program history. They also earned Second Team All-ACC honors after posting a third place finish at the ACC Outdoor Championships earlier in the year.
"After earning All-American status, all four of the men that competed on Wednesday night are eligible to return next year and they are already looking forward to that," Webb explained. "I'm excited about this team and can't wait to get after it in the fall preparing to be at the NCAA Indoor Championships."
