INDIANAPOLIS – No. 16 Pitt baseball has been selected as one of 20 potential NCAA Regional host candidates, the NCAA announced Friday. The final 16 predetermined sites will be revealed at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, May 30.
The entire 64-team field will be announced during the selection show, which is slated for Memorial Day at noon on ESPN2. The double-elimination, four-team regionals start on Friday, June 4.
"It's most definitely an honor to be considered one of the 20 mentioned for a potential NCAA Regional host site," Pitt head coach Mike Bell said. "I think it speaks volumes of the leadership and commitment we have here at the University of Pittsburgh and also recognizes the quality of success our student-athletes have achieved to this point. We know we still have a lot of work to do and have challenges ahead in arguably the deepest conference in the country."
The Panthers are currently in an historic season with by far the most success they've had since joining the ACC in the 2014 season. 22-13 overall, Pitt has won a program-best six conference series for a 16-11 record, the fourth-best record in the league. In the RPI rankings, the Panthers are currently slotted at No. 28, have the 21st-toughest strength of schedule and own 14 wins against quadrant one teams, tied for the fifth-most in the nation.
Pitt has made three NCAA Tournaments (1995, 1965 and 1959) and never hosted a regional. Overall, Pitt athletics has been home to six NCAA Tournaments on campus with three in the last three years. Volleyball (2019 and 2018) and women's basketball (2010 and 2007) hosted the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament, men's soccer hosted Lehigh in 2019 in the first round and women's gymnastics served as hosts of a 1998 NCAA Regional.
The Panthers have seven regular season games and the ACC Tournament left before the NCAA Tournament, beginning Friday at 6 p.m. against NC State at home.
The 20 potential host site schools:
Arizona Oregon
Arkansas Pittsburgh
Charlotte South Carolina
East Carolina Southern Mississippi
Florida Stanford
Gonzaga TCU
Louisiana Tech Tennessee
Mississippi State Texas
