Petkovic Named TopDrawerSoccer Player of the Week

PITTSBURGH – Pitt men's soccer sophomore midfielder Veljko Petkovic was named TopDrawerSoccer Player of the Week Tuesday for his performance against No. 18 UCF and No. 7 Washington in the NCAA Tournament.
Petkovic scored twice against No. 18 UCF en route to Pitt's 4-0 shutout in the third round. Petkovic's scored his first goal 23 seconds into the contest, setting a program record for quickest goal to start a match. The Nis, Serbia, native tallied his second goal of the contest in the 22nd minute, putting Pitt up 3-0.
Petkovic scored his third goal of the NCAA Tournament against No. 7 Washington in the quarterfinal round, sending a ball from 64 yards out over the keeper's head in the 89th minute for the third goal of Pitt's 3-0 shutout of the Huskies. The goal was featured on SportsCenter's Top-10 plays Monday, May 10 as top play No. 3 for the day.
In addition to Petkovic, senior defender Bryce Washington and sophomore midfielder Valentin Noel were named to the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week. Washington has anchored a back line that has kept its last two opponents scoreless and helped the Panthers hold off Washington's late match attack that featured five shots on goal.
Noel scored his second and third goals of the NCAA Tournament against UCF and Washington, netting the fourth goal of Pitt's 4-0 shutout of the Knights and scoring the eventual game-winner against the Huskies with a header in the 52nd minute. Noel has 14 goals on the year, which ranks second in the nation.
No. 2 Pitt will face No. 3 Indiana in the NCAA College Cup Friday, May 14 at 8:30 p.m. The match will be live on ESPNU.
