Panthers Advance to NCAA Round of 16 with Sweep of Utah

Pitt Sweeps 14-Seed Utah Thursday in Second Round
OMAHA, Neb. – For the first time in program history, the Pitt volleyball team (18-4, 14-4 ACC) won a second match in the NCAA Tournament to advance to the Regional Semifinal with a sweep of 14-seed Utah (13-5, 13-4 PAC-12) Thursday night at CHI Health Center Omaha.
The Panthers defeated the Utes by scores of 25-16, 25-18, 25-19. Pitt hit .369 for the night while holding Utah to a .203 clip. The Panthers had the advantage across the board, in kills (49-41), assists (47-37), service aces (5-0), digs (56-46) and blocks (10.0-5.0).
Senior right side hitter Chinaza Ndee produced a team-best 17 kills on a Pittsburgh-appropriate hitting percentage of .412. She added three blocks. Classmate Kayla Lund hit .467 from the outside with 15 kills on 30 attempts with just one error. She led Pitt with 16 digs to complete her eighth double-double of the year.
Springfield, Neb., native Sabrina Starks had a match-high six blocks to go along with five kills from the middle.
Sophomore libero Ashley Browske contributed 12 digs. Setters Kylee Levers and Lexis Akeo had 22 and 18 assists, respectively.
Set One: Pitt 25, Utah 16
Pitt's scrappy defense led the Panthers to a first-set victory, which included five blocks. A 6-1 surge put Pitt into an 18-10 lead, and they did not surrender it. The Panthers completed the stanza by outscoring the Utes 6-2 to win decisively, 25-16.
Set Two: Pitt 25, Utah 18
The second frame saw five ties, but the Panthers were able to outlast the Utes for a second-set victory to go up, 2-0 in the match. Pitt ended the frame on a decisive 11-3 run to win, 25-18. The Panthers hit .355 while holding the Utes to .206.
Set Three: Pitt 25, Utah 19
Following a tie at 14, Pitt hit the gas with a 3-0 run to push ahead. Further on, a 4-0 run swung the momentum permanently in the Panthers' favor, as they competed the sweep with a 25-19 win in the third. Pitt hit a match-high .450 in the third frame to close the door in dominant fashion.
