PITTSBURGH – Two University of Pittsburgh swimming & diving juniors were named to the All-ACC Academic team today, as diver Amy Read and swimmer Cooper Van der Laan were recognized by conference.
Read finished the season as one of the top divers from the ACC. The Leeds, England native became the first female Panther diver to qualify in all three events for the NCAA Championships. At the Zone A NCAA Diving Qualifiers, she earned third in the 1-meter (258.10), fifth in the 3-meter (276.95) and posted the highest score in the preliminary round of the platform dive.
A communications major, Read tallied 49 individual points at the women's ACC Championships in Greensboro, N.C., and finished in the top-15 in each of her three respective events. Earlier in the season, she broke the school platform dive record with a score of 289.65 at West Virginia.
Van der Laan concluded the season with multiple accolades, including First Team All-America status. The Gold Coast, Australia, native placed eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a school record time of 52.17 and became the first Panther to earn All-American in any breaststroke event.
Van der Laan earned two bronze medals at the men's ACC Championships, taking third in the 100 breast (52.52) and third in the 200 breast (1:52.76). The 200 breast time shattered the previous school record by more than two seconds.
The honor was Van der Laan's second of his career, while it is Read's first All-ACC academic selection.
