GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Pitt track & field program placed a program record six student-athletes on the All-ACC Indoor Track & Field Academic Team, as announced by the conference on Tuesday afternoon. The previous record for recipients of the academic recognition was five for the 2018 outdoor season.
Junior Eddita Pessima earned the academic recognition for the second straight indoor season as she became just the third Panther in program history to earn two All-ACC Indoor Track & Field Academic Team nods, joining teammate Breanna Phillips (2019, 2020) and Andin Fosam (2016, 2017, 2018). The other five recipients, Abena Atuobi, Jack Miller, Josh Higgins, Evan Addison and Felix Wolter all earned a spot on the team for the first time in their Pitt career.
Pessima, a psychology major with a 3.32 cumulative GPA, wrapped up another strong indoor campaign for the Panthers with Second Team All-ACC honors in the 60m hurdles. The defending ACC bronze medalist was able to secure fifth place at this seasons ACC Indoor Championships after nearly breaking her own school record in the event in the prelims as she crossed the finish line in 8.24 seconds (0.01 seconds off her school record). The junior was then a member of the Panthers' 4x400m relay squad that scored five points and a fourth place finish with a season-best time of 3:45.49. In all, Pessima scored a total of 10 points for her team at the conference meet.
Atuobi, a marketing and supply chain management major with a 3.17 cumulative GPA, posted the best indoor season of her career as she was able to earn Second Team All-ACC honors in the shot put. The talented senior had an impressive Indoor ACC Championship meet as she launched a huge personal record throw that traveled 51-0.25 (15.55m) and secured a sixth place finish in the strong field. Her throw marked the third best in program history in the indoor shot put.
After a program-best fourth place finish at the ACC Indoor championships, the Pitt men placed four student-athletes on the All-ACC Academic squad.
Wolter, a computer science major with a 3.50 cumulative GPA, had a memorable indoor campaign for the Panthers as he claimed the ACC crown in the heptathlon and went on to earn First Team All-America honors after a fourth place showing at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The graduate transfer became the first Pitt heptathlete to earn First Team All-America honors as he set a new program record with a score of 5,907. He posted five personal record marks during the seven-event meet while also posting three top-10 marks in Pitt history (pole vault, long jump, high jump).
Miller, an undeclared major with a 3.06 cumulative GPA, was impressive in his first career indoor ACC Championship appearance as he posted a fifth place finish in the 3000m run to score points for his team. The redshirt freshman also broke the school record in the event as he crossed the finish line in 8:01.54 to earn Second Team All-ACC honors. Miller then ran the anchor leg of the Panthers' distance medley relay squad that took home the silver medal in 9:42.29, the third fastest time in program history. He also earned Second Team All-ACC honors for his efforts in the DMR.
Higgins, a chemical engineering major with a 3.24 cumulative GPA, earned Second Team All-ACC honors in the distance medley relay as he helped the Panthers finish with the silver medal in 9:42.29, the third fastest time in program history. The senior then posted a 13th place finish in the mile in 4:09.27 and a 15th place finish in the 3000m run in a personal record time of 8:14.00.
Addison, a political science major with a 3.26 cumulative GPA, earned Second Team All-ACC honors for the first time in his career as he ran the opening leg of the Panthers' distance medley relay that posted a second place finish in 9:42.29, the third fastest in program history. He then finished 24th in the 3000m run and 25th in the mile to wrap up his championship meet.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the team.
The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
