No. 18 Pitt Opens Series at Virginia with 2-1 Win

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 18 Pitt baseball (10-4, 7-3) opened its ACC series at (RV) Virginia (8-9, 2-8) with a 2-1 win Saturday afternoon at Disharoon Park. The Panthers recorded their first win as a ranked team since joining the ACC for the 2014 season.
Mitch Myers (2-2) threw his first complete game as a Panther, allowing just one run and three hits with five strikeouts in 105 pitches. Myers retired the side five times, including 11-straight batters from the fourth-seventh innings, and allowed a baserunner into scoring position just twice.
The Cavaliers got the board first in the third inning on a sac fly, but the Panthers tied it up in their next trip to the plate. David Yanni hit a two-out solo home run, his sixth of the season, to right field.
Pitt took the lead in the sixth inning. Ron Washington, Jr. singled to left field with one out, and Samuel Frontino drew a two-out walk. Bryce Hulett stayed alive in an eight-pitch at-bat and knocked in Washington, Jr. with a single to right field.
The second game of the series is Sunday at 1 p.m.

NOTES
- Pitt has won four of its last five ACC games it continues to its best start in league play.
- The Panthers won its first in eight games at Virginia.
- Myers threw the first complete game as a Panther since former first-round pick T.J. Zeuch went the distance in a 6-5 win at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2016.
- Six Panthers registered hits, including a game-high two by Brock Franks.
- Franks had the game's only other extra-base hit besides the homer by Yanni with a double in the eighth inning.
- Sky Duff reached base a game-high three times with a single and two walks.
- The combined four hits and walks was the lowest given up by Pitt this season.
