PITTSBURGH—Five members of the University of Pittsburgh wrestling program will begin their chase for All-America and national championship dreams Thursday when the NCAA Wrestling Championships begin in St. Louis at the Enterprise Center.
Competing for the Panthers over the next few days in St. Louis will be some of the nation's top seeds. Pitt enters these 2021 NCAA Championships with three wrestlers ranked in the top six: No. 3 Jake Wentzel at 165 pounds, No. 5 Micky Phillippi at 133 pounds, No. 6 Nino Bonaccorsi at 197 pounds.
Pitt enters the NCAA event with three top-six seeds for the first time since 1998, which was also the last time that three Panthers stood on the podium as NCAA All-Americans in wrestling.
Also competing for the Panthers in St. Louis will be No. 16 Cole Matthews at 141 pounds and No. 30 Gregg Harvey at 184 pounds, both of whom impressed at the recent ACC Championships.
The two-time defending ACC champion at 165 pounds, Wentzel (9-1) earned the highest seed among Pitt's NCAA qualifiers, garnering the No. 3 seed and an opening match with Drexel's Evan Barczak (6-3).
Pitt's other ACC champion, Bonaccorsi (9-1) received the No. 6 seed at 197 pounds and will meet Stanford's Nick Stemmet (7-2) in the opening round on Thursday.
A three-time NCAA qualifier, Phillippi (8-1) also holds strong hopes of placing on the NCAA podium and will begin his run at nationals as the No. 5 seed against Ty Smith (8-5) of Utah Valley.
Matthews (6-5) and Harvey (6-6) could also contend for All-America places at 141 and 184 pounds, respectively. Matthews will meet Rider's McKenzie Bell (7-3) in the first round, while Harvey opens his tournament against No. 3 Lou Deprez (7-0) of Binghamton.
The 2021 NCAA Championships will be feature coverage of every mat on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app, with general coverage of Thursday's opening round session to air on ESPNU at 11 a.m. ET. Thursday's second round coverage will be shown on ESPN2 starting at 6 p.m. as well.
