Read, McDaniels Set for NCAA Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Two female divers will represent the University of Pittsburgh this weekend at the NCAA Championships, as junior Amy Read and freshman Claire McDaniels prep for the three day meet beginning Thursday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
"Going into meets, we talk about process goals rather than outcome," said Pitt diving head coach Katie Hazelton. "For each dive we know what key technical points will result in great dives. I want them to be confident because they have done all the hard work and reps at home. Now they need to just dive like they do in training, attack their starts and be confident on their finishes."
Read, a native of Leeds, England, made history at the NCAA Zone A Championship Qualifier meet last week in Greensboro, becoming the first female diver in Pitt history to qualify for all three events (1-meter, 3-meter and platform). Read posted a third-place score of 258.10 in the 1-meter, a fifth-place score of 276.95 in the 3-meter and tallied a preliminary mark of 265.85 in the platform, tallying enough points to clinch a spot in the event.
Read also endured success at the ACC Championships in Greensboro Feb. 17-20, taking sixth in the platform (265.05), 14th in the 3-meter (269.00) and 15th in the 1-meter (261.70), earning points for each event. She became the third Pitt diver to compete for gold multiple times at the ACC meet, joining program greats Dominic Giordano and Meme Sharp. Read's regular season highlight included breaking the school record in the platform, tallying a score of 289.65, breaking the previous mark by more than 20 points set by Krista Jones in 2019.
A product of Chapel Hill, N.C., McDaniels clinched a spot in the NCAA Championships in the platform event, posting a finals score of 228.90 at the NCAA Zone A Championship Qualifier for fourth-place. She was the highest finisher for the Panthers in the event.
McDaniels earned ninth at the ACC Championships, registering a personal record score of 254.30 and earning points for the Panthers at the meet. In her first collegiate meet, McDaniels earned a score of 247.50 and placed fourth in a dual meet against West Virginia.
Diving begins at 12:30 p.m. Thursday with the one-meter trials, followed by the consolation finals 10 minutes after the trial round ends. The one meter diving finals will begin in the evening, with all swimming and diving final rounds beginning at 6 p.m.
For each event, 16 divers move on to the finals and consolation finals, with participants 9-16 competing in the consolation finals 10 minutes after the trial round. The top eight finishers from the trial round automatically clinch a spot in the finals that same evening.
