PITTSBURGH – Pitt baseball debuted in the top-25 nationally for the first time since May 13, 2013 with selections in the polls by DIBaseball.com (No. 18) and Baseball America (No. 19). The rankings are the first since joining the ACC for the 2014 season.
"Always great for the student-athletes to be recognized on a national level for their accomplishments on the field against a very challenging schedule," said Pitt head coach Mike Bell. "I'm very excited for our players and staff's hard work, but we know the road ahead will not get any easier as we shift our focus to a national power in Virginia this upcoming weekend."
Starting the season at 9-4 overall with all 13 games away from home, the Panthers are off to its best start in ACC play at 6-3 and tied for first place in the leagues' Coastal Division with North Carolina and Georgia Tech.
Pitt earned their second road ACC series win at a top-10 team this weekend against then-No. 7 Georgia Tech, scoring seven runs in the final inning Friday for an 11-9 comeback win and then storming out to an 11-0 lead on Sunday for an eventual 18-12 victory. The Panthers snapped a 12-series ACC and home victory streak for the Yellow Jackets.
Earlier this season, Pitt swept then-No. 9 Florida State with 1-0, 7-2 and 9-7 (13 innings) victories for its first series-sweep over a top-10 opponent and the first road sweep in ACC play. The Panthers also own a series victory against Indiana State, who owns four victories against ranked teams and is receiving votes in several polls.
The No. 18 ranking by DIBaseball is tied for the fourth-highest ranking in program history and its first ever ranking in the poll. The No. 19 ranking is the highest-ever in Baseball America's Poll.
Pitt is also receiving the most votes in the USA TODAY Coaches' Poll for teams outside of the top-25 and slotted at No. 28 by Collegiate Baseball.
The Panthers were last ranked after coming off of a weekend sweep of Villanova and its 40th victory of the season. That team was ranked as high as No. 16th Collegiate Baseball and was previously 17th by the same poll in the previous two weeks.
Pitt finishes out 16-straight games away from home with its fourth ACC weekend of the series against Virginia that begins Friday at 4 p.m.
