Panthers to Visit Villanova, Host West Virginia
PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh volleyball head coach Dan Fisher announced Tuesday the addition of two non-conference matches to the Panthers' spring 2021 schedule.
Pitt will visit Villanova Sunday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m. ET, to kick off its spring slate. The Panthers will host rival West Virginia Wednesday, March 24, at 7 p.m. ET at Fitzgerald Field House, marking the 42nd edition of the Backyard Brawl.
Pitt volleyball holds a 33-9 record all-time against Villanova, with the last meeting on Nov. 11, 2011, where the Panthers picked up a 3-1 win on the road.
The Panthers own a 39-2 record against West Virginia, winning 39 consecutive meetings in the series against the Mountaineers between 1975-2009. The teams last met Oct. 15, 2011, in Morgantown, W.Va., when WVU won in five sets.
In January Pitt announced a 10-match ACC schedule, set to begin March 6 at home against Virginia.
Pitt has the option to add up to two more non-conference opponents during spring regular season play, which may be announced later.
All 12 spring matches will count in addition to the team's fall 2020 record, as the Panthers work toward qualification for the 2020 NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship.
In November the NCAA Division I Council approved a package of proposals to move 2020 fall championships to the spring of 2021. Omaha, Neb., is the site of the entire 2020 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship, scheduled for April 13-24, with a 48-team bracket. Thirty-two of the teams will be automatic qualifiers, with 16 at-large selections. The normal bracket size for the championship is 64 teams. Regular-season play will span from Jan. 22-April 3, with selections April 4. The ACC's determination of the automatic qualifiers for fall sports is yet to be finalized.
