PITTSBURGH – Katrina Coca of women's gymnastics and Nino Bonaccorsi of wrestling were named the Office Depot/Supra Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
Coca earned her second individual event win of 2021 by tying a season-best score of 9.875 on the uneven bars at the Panthers' tri-meet Sunday evening. Following the bars rotation, Coca contributed to Pitt's highest team event score of the season, as the Panthers posted a 49.075 on balance beam. The Stillwater, Okla., native recorded a 9.775 for the event. Pitt (2-2, 2-1 EAGL) won the tri-meet against East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) opponents NC State and Towson, earning a season-high and conference-high score of 195.700.
Bonaccorsi recorded one of the best wins of the NCAA Division I wrestling season thus far on Friday night, knocking off undefeated and No. 3-ranked Jay Aiello of Virginia by 7-5 decision at 197 pounds. With the dual between the Panthers and Cavaliers tied 13-13 entering the bout, No. 8 Bonaccorsi defeated the defending ACC champion despite falling behind not once, but twice. But Bonaccorsi (5-1) used a relentless attacking display to earn three takedowns of Aiello, including one in the final seconds that swung the individual matchup in his favor.
