Volleyball, Football Student-Athletes Honored
PITTSBURGH – Kayla Lund of volleyball and Erick Hallett II of football were named the Pitt Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
Lund returned to the court Friday and Saturday and helped guide the No. 3-seeded volleyball team to NCAA Tournament wins against UMBC and Penn State Friday and Saturday, respectively, at the Petersen Events Center. With the two victories, the Panthers reached the NCAA Regional Semifinal round for the second consecutive season. The outside hitter averaged 4.20 kills per frame on .421 hitting over five sets played in two matches. She added 2.20 digs per set in addition to two service aces and four blocks total. Up next, the Panthers will host Kansas at Fitzgerald Field House Thursday at 1 p.m. ET for a chance to advance to the Regional Final, which will be played Saturday at 4 p.m. ET at Fitzgerald Field House.
Hallett helped Pitt earn its first ACC football title on Saturday night in Charlotte and received the John D. Swofford Most Valuable Player Award after media voted him MVP following his two-interception performance in the Subway ACC Football Championship Game. He keyed an outstanding effort by the Pitt defense to shut down Wake Forest's prolific attack after the first quarter.
With Pitt holding a narrow 24-21 lead in the third quarter, Hallett's diving interception sparked a sequence that will forever be remembered by Panthers fans. His first pick set up an Israel Abanikanda touchdown. Following another Pitt touchdown sparked by an interception from teammate A.J. Woods, Hallett essentially sealed the conference championship for the Panthers with a 19-yard pick six TD that made the score 45-21, which proved to be the final result.
The Panthers held the Demon Deacons scoreless in the final three quarters of the game, largely thanks to the effort of Pitt's secondary, which recorded four interceptions in a game for the first time under head coach Pat Narduzzi.
