
Pitt Wins Illinois MatMen Open

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill.—The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team concluded the 2021 calendar year by winning the team tournament title this week at the Illinois MatMen Open at NOW Arena.
The two-day tournament, which was a replacement event for the canceled Midlands Championships, featured several talented squads from across the country.
The Panthers totaled 121.5 points to edge Penn (118 points) for the team trophy. Pitt also beat out Big Ten programs Wisconsin, Illinois and Rutgers for first place overall.

Elijah Cleary led the Panthers by securing the 157-pound title in impressive fashion. Entering the week ranked No. 28 in his weight class by InterMat, Cleary defeated No. 10 Kendall Coleman of Purdue and No. 20 Doug Zapf of Penn – both in thrilling one-point matches – to clinch his individual gold medal.
Also placing high on the podium for Pitt was runner-up finishers Micky Phillippi at 133 pounds and Nino Bonaccorsi at 197 pounds. Cole Matthews and Jake Wentzel wrestled back to win third at 141 and 165 pounds, respectively, which proved crucial for the Panthers in the team race.

The 21st-ranked Panthers (3-2) return home on Friday, Jan. 7 to challenge Penn once again for an exciting in-state dual matchup.
No. 6 Arizona State visits Fitzgerald Field House on Jan. 14 before Pitt welcomes a pair of ACC foes – Virginia and No. 10 Virginia Tech – on Jan. 21 and Jan. 28, respectively.
