Both teams traded baskets for the ensuing minutes until Virginia built a six point advantage (48-42) with 8:57 left in regulation. The Cavaliers extended the lead to seven on two separate occasions, but a three, layup and free throw from Gueye fueled a 6-0 run to make it a one-point, 52-51 ballgame with just under three minutes left.

A Pitt turnover gave the Cavaliers the ball with nine seconds left. Taine Murray missed a three-pointer, but Gardner gathered the offensive rebound and made an 18-foot jumper with 0.9 seconds remaining. Pitt's inbound pass was deflected and the Panthers fell 57-56.
