Odukale & Gueye Pace Panthers to 64-55 Win Over Jacksonville

PITTSBURGH – Sophomore guard Femi Odukale tied a career-high with 28 points and graduate student forward Mouhamadou Gueye totaled 15 points and 12 rebounds in Pitt's 64-55 victory over Jacksonville Tuesday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center.
Odukale made a career-best five three-pointers including three in the first half. Gueye added four assists and four blocks to his name and two highlight reel dunks in the second half to boost Pitt over the Dolphins. Senior Jamarius Burton had 12 points and six rebounds while sophomore John Hugley finished with eight points and nine boards.
Through the first 10 minutes of play, Pitt (5-7) totaled four threes and five blocks, highlighted by Gueye who had five points and two blocks in that span. The Panthers led 18-10 with ten to play and led by as much as six (26-20) with two and a half left in the first.
Jackonville (7-4) cut the lead to two, 26-24, before the break as the Panthers led after 20 minutes. Odukale, whose career-high in three-pointers made was two before today, made three in the first half and finished the half with 11 points. Pitt as a team shot 6-of-17 (35.3%) from deep and 10-of-31 (32.3%) from the field.
The Dolphins took their first lead of the game with their shot of the second half, a made three-pointer from Kevion Nolan made it a 27-26 contest. Pitt went on a 14-0 run over a 4:51 span that included two powerful dunks from Gueye to lead 50-35 with just over eight to play.
Pitt got its lead all the way to 17 (59-42) and held a double-digit lead for most of the way until the final minute of the contest. Two free throws from Burton ultimately sealed the deal and the Panthers entered the holiday with a nine point victory.
The Panthers finished 33.3% (9-27) from deep for the game while shooting 37.7% (20-53) overall. After being outrebounded 21-17 in the first half, Pitt finished the game with a 37-35 rebounding advantage.
Pitt stays home and welcomes ACC opponent Notre Dame to the Petersen Events Center Tuesday, Dec. 28. Start time is set for 8 p.m. on ESPN2.
