WASHINGTON, D.C. – In its non-conference finale, the No. 3 Pitt volleyball team (23-2, 12-2 ACC) swept American (16-13, 10-5 Patriot League) in a midweek matinee Tuesday at Bender Arena.
The Panthers dominated from start to finish, taking down the Eagles by scores of 25-7, 25-11, 25-16. Pitt had the upper hand across the board, in kills (43-19), assists (41-19), service aces (7-0), digs (39-25), blocks (9.0-5.0) and hitting percentage (.410-.000).
Five Panthers produced five or more kills. Middle blocker Serena Gray led the way with nine on .692 hitting with zero errors on 13 attempts. Outside hitters Valeria Vazquez Gomez and Leketor Member-Meneh each had eight kills. Chinaza Ndee and Jordan Lockwood each had five from the right side.
Vazquez Gomez and libero Ashley Browske each picked up a team-best 10 digs. Gray, Member-Meneh and middle blocker Anastasia Russ each had three blocks. Member-Meneh also contributed three service aces to her stat line.
Setters Kylee Levers and Lexis Akeo had 15 and 13 assists, respectively.
NOTE: Ndee is the older sister of American junior middle blocker Onuchi Ndee. Tuesday was the first time they had met across the net in NCAA Division I competition. Unfortunately, Onuchi was unavailable due to injury.
SET ONE: No. 3 Pitt 25, American 7
It was a lopsided first frame, with the Panthers out-hitting American by a wide margin (.520 to -.077). A 9-0 run swung the set permanently in Pitt's favor, as the Panthers took a commanding 14-2 lead that they would not surrender. Member-Meneh and Gray led the Panthers with four kills apiece, followed by Russ with three.
SET TWO: No. 3 Pitt 25, American 11
The Eagles cut the score to a one-point margin (8-7) after a 3-1 run, but after that, it was all Pitt. The Panthers responded with eight unanswered points to go up, 16-7, and only allowed four more points for the remainder of the frame. For the second consecutive set, Pitt held American to a negative hitting clips (-.043), while the Panthers hit .320.
SET THREE: No. 3 Pitt 25, American 16
Much like the previous two sets, Pitt used a 7-1 run to take a commanding 21-12 lead and stayed ahead the rest of the way. The Eagles hit .088 in the third and final frame while Pitt hit .394.

Pitt will travel to Syracuse for the second of two matches this season against the Orange. The Panthers swept Syracuse Friday, Nov. 5, in Pittsburgh. The rematch is set for Friday at 7 p.m. ET in Syracuse, N.Y.
