The Panthers tallied 21 first-place finishes across both days of competition
PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh swimming and diving team came out on top over George Washington in the second and final day of competition at Trees Pool. The Panthers tallied 21 first-place finishes throughout the entirety of the two-day meet. The men ended with a final score of 174-124, while the women finished leading 192-108 over the Colonials.
For the women, freshman Janelle Schulz had a standout performance, earning her first two collegiate wins in the 50 Free (24:08 – PR) and 100 Free (52.22) events, while also assisting the 200 Free Relay A to victory (1:36.22). Daisy Anderson continued her dominance in the backstroke events, securing first-place finishes in the 100 Back (56.20 – PR) and the 200 Back (2:01.46), in addition to leading the 200 Medley Relay A to a victory (1:44.82).
On the men's side, freshman Trent Russano notched his first collegiate win in the 200 Free (1:41.57), followed by Adam Mahler (1:42.23 – PR) in second and Dominic Toledo (1:42.29) for a sweep of the event. The trio of Cooper Van der Laan (53.69), Jerry Chen (54.44), and Javier Zorzano (57.49) earned the second event sweep for the men in the 100 Breaststroke.
"It wasn't the prettiest of meets," said head coach John Hargis. "We lost entirely too many close races and that goes back to details and what we are doing everyday at practice. However, we had a lot of good races today and we know the areas we have to develop and work on. After we give the kids a bit of rest and allow their bodies to recover, I expect things to blossom from there."
In the final diving event against the Colonials, the men acquired their third sweep of the weekend in the 3M. Dylan Reed secured first place with 374.18 points, followed by Josh Parquet with a new personal best of 333.83 and Cameron Cash, also with a new personal best of 332.10. For the women, Amy Read and Serena Buchwald secured the 1-2 finish with scores of 329.85 and 305.40 respectively. All five podium finishers secured NCAA Zone Cuts.
"Overall, we performed well," head diving coach Katie Kasprzak said. "We saw a great performance today out of Josh [Parquet]. His confidence this year is just getting higher every meet and I was really pleased with his dives today. The depth that we are seeing is holding us in good stead, but now it's time to regroup for Ohio State and keep building."
