
Panthers Valiant Effort Falls Just Short To #23 Texas A&M in Paradise, 57-46

ST. THOMAS, USVI – The Pitt women's basketball team (4-1, 0-0 ACC) dropped their first game of the season Thursday night in the first game of the Paradise Jam as #23 Texas A&M snuck past the Panthers, 57-46. Liatu King had a huge game in the loss as she recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 19 rebounds.
The Panthers were led offensively by junior Dayshanette Harris who came off the bench and provided Pitt with a team-high 16 points on 4-of-9 from the floor and 8-of-11 from the free throw line. King netted 10 points while posting a career-high 19 rebounds. Her 19 rebounds marked the most in a game by a Pitt player since Chelsea Cole grabbed 22 against Seton Hall on Feb. 20, 2010.
The game turned in the final four minutes as the Panthers regained the lead, 45-44, as Emy Hayford connected on a jumper from the high post. The Aggies were able to respond with an 11-0 run thanks to a trio of triples while the Panthers went cold from the floor. Texas A&M finished the game outscoring Pitt 13-1 across the final four minutes to secure the win.
The first quarter turned into a defensive struggle after the Panthers gained an early 5-2 lead on a King layup. The Aggies responded with a 7-0 run to take the 9-5 lead but the Panthers ended the quarter with three free throws by Amber Brown to send the game into the second quarter with Texas A&M clinging to a 9-8 lead. Pitt held the Aggies to 2-of-22 shooting in the opening frame.
Pitt was able to take the lead in the second quarter as Harris took over the scoring role off the bench, netting eight points in the quarter. She hit back-to-back jumpers and a pair of free throws to give Pitt the 16-13 lead midway through the second quarter but Texas A&M responded with two straight field goals to take the 17-16 lead with under two minutes to play. Harris and Brown connected on a pair of free throws each to give Pitt the 20-19 lead at half.
Pitt came out of the locker room with some energy as King finished off a layup and Harris came off the bench and finished off a three-point play to push the Panthers lead out to 25-21. The Aggies went on a 12-4 run to regain the 33-29 lead but Pitt fought right back and was able to tie the game, 35-35, as King finished off a layup after a great feed from Hayford. The Aggies finished the quarter with the 39-37 lead as Taisha Exanor connected on one free throw to end the scoring for Pitt.
The Aggies pushed their lead to three, 44-41, early in the fourth but Pitt responded to regain the lead as Hayford connected on a jumper to make it 45-44 in favor of the Panthers. Pitt went cold from the field over the final four minutes and the Aggies closed the game on a 13-1 run to take the opening game victory.
Hayford finished off her night with eight points while Brown netted six points and two rebounds. Rita Igbokwe grabbed six rebounds, two points, two steals and two blocks in the loss.
As a team, the Panthers shot 29.8% from the floor while holding Texas A&M to a season-low 29.2% shooting. Pitt lost the rebounding battle 46-42 but outscored the Aggies 22-14 inside the paint in the loss.
Texas A&M had three players in double figures as Destiny Pitts and Jordan Nixon led the way with 12 points each. Maliah Johnson came off the bench and netted nine points and eight rebounds in the win for the Aggies.
