No. 15 Pitt Triumphs in Home Opener over Maryland, 26-7

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team responded from Sunday's loss at Lehigh in emphatic fashion by winning its 2021-22 home opener 26-7 over Maryland on Monday evening at Fitzgerald Field House.
The Panthers (3-1), ranked No. 15 in the NWCA Coaches Poll this week, won eight of the 10 bouts in the ACC-Big Ten matchup over the Terrapins (0-2).
"It was nice to get a team win in front of our fans tonight," Pitt head coach Keith Gavin said. "We were better than yesterday, but we still need to work to score more points. It's a long season and we'll work hard in practice the next few weeks to continue to improve and focus on consistency."
Gage Curry got the Panthers rolling with a technical fall in the opening match at 125 pounds, while three Pitt wrestlers – Cole Matthews, Elijah Cleary and Jake Slinger – all won in sudden victory. Slinger's win over No. 32 Zach Schrader at heavyweight was the biggest upset of the evening.
Also winning matches for the Panthers were Micky Phillippi, Luke Kemerer, Jake Wentzel and Nino Bonaccorsi, who each earned decisions in relatively comfortable fashion.

After Thanksgiving break and final exams, the Panthers return to action Dec. 12 for another ACC-Big Ten matchup at Ohio State. That exciting nonconference dual will begin at 1 p.m. on the BTN+ streaming service.
