EDINBORO, Pa.—For the second straight evening, the University of Pittsburgh wrestling team headed to heavyweight in a dual on the road with the result in doubt.
For the second straight night, Jake Slinger finished clinched a dramatic team win with a pin.
Pitt, ranked No. 15 to begin the season by the NWCA Coaches Poll, used Slinger's fall at heavyweight over Edinboro's Max Millin to secure a 28-20 dual triumph at McComb Fieldhouse on Saturday night.
In an entertaining dual full of bonus-point wins and crazy scrambles, Elijah Cleary, a graduate transfer from Ohio State, also won by pin at 157 pounds for the Panthers. Micky Phillippi and Hunter Kernan added technical-fall victories at 133 and 174 pounds, respectively, to boost Pitt's point total.
Pitt improved to 14-16 in the all-time series with in-state foe Edinboro. In the first meeting between the western Pennsylvania collegiate wrestling stalwarts since 2016, the Panthers edged the Scots to extend their winning streak in the series to four matches.
Gage Curry won at 125 pounds in his Pitt dual debut, while Jake Wentzel also took a decision victory.
Pitt's lineup was once again missing four projected starters due to various minor injuries and with Nino Bonaccorsi just coming back from the U23 World Championships in Serbia late this week.
Coach Keith Gavin recapped what was a gritty opening weekend away from home for the Panthers.
"We knew both duals this weekend would be a scrap. We'll take two hard-fought team wins," Gavin said. "Always pleased to win as a team, but we do need to see better effort in certain areas. We'll get back to work next week in practice to correct that."
"Slinger had a great weekend for us, winning both matches with pins," Gavin added. "Elijah was ready to go tonight as well and scored some crucial team points with his pin. It was good to see him and Gage—both transfers—contribute tonight and bring quality depth to our roster like we knew they would."
