PITTSBURGH – Senior guard Jamarius Burton underwent a successful procedure on his left knee Friday morning and is expected to be sidelined for 4-to-6 weeks.
"Jamarius had some swelling and discomfort in his knee and after evaluation by our medical staff we determined the best course of action would be to take care of it now before the start of the season," said head coach Jeff Capel. "With his level of maturity and commitment to the game, we are extremely confident Jamarius will put in the work to make a full recovery. As one of the leaders in the program, I know he we remain engaged with the coaches and his teammates throughout the rehab process and continue to build strong relationships within the program. We look forward to having him back out on the court as soon as the recovery process allows."
A 6-4 guard out of Charlotte, N.C., Burton began his career at Wichita State where he averaged 10.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game, while shooting 38 percent from three-point range for the Shockers, as a sophomore during the 2019-20 season. He averaged 4.3 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 19.0 minutes per game over 23 contests (four starts) last season at Texas Tech.
Burton is averaging 7.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game over 90 career contests (56 starts) at Wichita State and Texas Tech. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining for the Panthers.
Pitt opens the 2021-22 campaign Tuesday, Nov. 9 against The Citadel at the Petersen Events Center.
