ACC Coastal Co-Champions! No. 12 Pitt Defeats No. 21 Virginia Tech

PITTSBURGH – The No. 12 Pitt men's soccer team defeated No. 21 Virginia Tech, 4-1, Friday evening at Ambrose Urbanic Field on Senior Day to claim a share of the ACC Coastal Division title.
NEWS & NOTES
Pitt and Virginia Tech (9-4-3, 3-4-1 ACC) each recorded two shots in the first 20 minutes of action. In the 23rd minute, Virginia Tech's Sivert Haugli was assessed a red card just outside the penalty box, giving Pitt a free kick. Jacquesson bended the ball toward the upper 90 with his right foot off the free kick and gave the Panthers their first goal of the night.
Due to the red card, the Hokies played with 10 men for the remainder of the contest.
Less than three minutes later (26'), Almeida took a pass from freshman Guilherme Feitosa and in stride, took a shot from 25 yards out. The ball hit underneath the crossbar and angled down inside the net for the second goal of the match. The goal was Almeida's seventh of the season and sixth at home.
In the 30th minute, the Panthers drew a penalty kick in the box, sending Dexter to the spot for the penalty kick. He converted, putting Pitt up 3-0 midway through the first half. The three goals in a 6 minute, 25 second span breaks a school record for three consecutive goals scored in the same match. The previous record was set Monday vs. UMass, where the Panthers scored three goals in 9 minutes, 43 seconds.
The Panthers led 6-2 in shots and 5-0 in corner kicks after 45 minutes of action.
Pitt added its fourth goal of the night in the 68th minute, as Sahmkow scored from inside the six-yard box for his first career score.
Virginia Tech scored its lone goal in the 87th minute, but the Panthers held the Hokies without a shot for the remaining three minutes.
Pitt finished the night with 14 shots and eight corners, compared to Virginia Tech's six shots and two corners. Campuzano earned his 26th career win in goal, finishing with one stop in goal.
NEWS & NOTES
- Pitt claimed its second consecutive ACC Coastal Division crown, the first back-to-back ACC division title in program history. The Panthers share the title with Duke, who both finished with 16 total points in conference play this season.
- With the victory, the Panthers earned the No. 1 seed in the ACC Championship. Pitt will play the winner of #8 Boston College and #9 Virginia Tech Sunday, Nov. 7 at home at 4 p.m.
- The home victory was the 18th-straight for Pitt, who entered the contest with the longest active home ACC win streak and the second longest active home unbeaten streak in the nation.
- Four different Panthers scored, including sophomore Bertin Jacquesson, senior Rodrigo Almeida, graduate student Alexander Dexter and freshman Luis Sahmkow.
- Pitt honored its nine seniors – Nico Campuzano, Jasper Löeffelsend, Arturo Ordoñez, Almeida, Dexter, Sito Sena, Matt Bailey, Jackson Walti and Anthony Harding.
