PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team will host in-state rival Lehigh in a dual at the Fitzgerald Field House on Saturday, Jan. 9 at 5 p.m.
The Panthers, ranked No. 13 by the NWCA Coaches Poll this week, open their home schedule by welcoming No. 17-ranked Lehigh to Pittsburgh in one of Pitt's most common wrestling duals, with Saturday's matchup marking the 65th all-time meeting between Pitt and Lehigh on the mat.
Due to the capacity regulations following direction from the Governor's office, the general public will not be able to attend Saturday's Pitt-Lehigh wrestling dual at the Fitzgerald Field House.
The exciting Top-25 matchup between the Panthers (1-0) and Mountain Hawks (0-0) will be broadcast by ACC Network Extra online and via the WatchESPN app at this link.
After the dual, additional matchups between Pitt and Lehigh wrestlers will also be shown at this link.
The Panthers are coming off a 22-14 victory at Navy last Sunday, while the Mountain Hawks will wrestle for the first time in 2021 after their opening dual was canceled due to virus concerns at Hofstra.
After leading the Panthers to a dramatic 19-18 victory at Lehigh last season, Pitt head coach Keith Gavin is looking forward to another matchup against the defending EIWA conference champions.
"With this being a shortened season, every opportunity is huge," Gavin said. "We're especially grateful to everyone who has helped make it possible for us to compete at home again. We have a ton of respect for Lehigh and expect another challenging dual against them."
Saturday's dual will feature numerous ranked individual wrestlers, with five Panthers featured in the FloWrestling Top 25 of their respective weight classes this week and two Lehigh probables ranked.
No. 5 Nino Bonaccorsi got his season off to a great start at 197 pounds with a technical fall at Navy, while No. 6 Micky Phillippi also impressed with a win at 133.
No. 8 Jake Wentzel at 165 pounds was Pitt's standout performer, however, beating No. 7 Tanner Skidgel of Navy to earn ACC Wrestler of the Week honors and also garner National Wrestler of the Week recognition from The Open Mat this week.
No. 16 Cole Matthews at 141 pounds and No. 22 Gregg Harvey at 184 pounds round out the ranked Panthers set to compete as Pitt seeks its first win at home against Lehigh since 1997.
