PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh wrestling team looks to return to winning ways this Friday during an ACC dual matchup at Virginia at 5 p.m. in Charlottesville's Memorial Gymnasium.
The matchup between the 12th-ranked Panthers (3-1, 1-1 ACC) and Cavaliers (1-2, 0-2 ACC) will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra and via the WatchESPN app at this link.
Pitt and Virginia are both coming off losses to top-10 opponents after the Panthers fell at No. 4 NC State and the Cavaliers dropped match against No. 8 Virginia Tech last weekend.
Led by head coach Keith Gavin, the Panthers will seek a sixth consecutive win against Virginia. Pitt defeated the Cavaliers 23-10 last season at the Fitzgerald Field House and is 7-1 all-time against UVA.
The 2021 Pitt-Virginia could shape up to be a close, entertaining contest, with both teams featuring five ranked wrestlers according this week's InterMat individual rankings.
For the Panthers, No. 4 Micky Phillippi carries a 17-match winning streak into Friday night, when he expects to face No. 12 Louie Hayes from Virginia in an important clash at 133 pounds.
The other anticipated ranked matchups are at 165 and 197 pounds, where No. 11 Jake Wentzel of Pitt should meet No. 13 Jake Keating of Virginia and No. 8 Nino Bonaccorsi is expected to meet Virginia's undefeated and No. 3-ranked Jay Aiello in a potential top-10 individual matchup.
No. 14 Cole Matthews at 141 and No. 16 Gregg Harvey at 184 also highlight Pitt's probables, while Virginia's lineup could include No. 15 Justin McCoy at 157 and No. 20 Quinn Miller at heavyweight.
At the conclusion of the dual, extra individual matches between Pitt and Virginia athletes will be held.
