PITTSBURGH – Head Coach Jodi Hermanek and the University of Pittsburgh softball team announced its non-conference schedule this morning.
"We are excited to get underway with the 2021 season, and we are preparing this season like 'business as usual'," said Hermanek. Last season taught us to fill our softball and team buckets every day, and our squad is grateful and 'Happy 2 Play' together again. Our focus is on our game, our preparation and our goals as a unit."
Pitt opens the season in Leesburg, Fla., for the Spring Games Feb. 12-13. The Panthers' first day of action Friday consists of Liberty (11 a.m.) followed by New Mexico State (1:30 p.m.). Pitt concludes the Spring Games Saturday against Middle Tennessee (10 a.m.) and Liberty (12:30 a.m.).
Following the ACC Pod Play in Raleigh/Durham, N.C., Feb. 18-21, the Panthers travel to Mercer University for the two day Black and Orange Challenge Feb. 26-27. Pitt plays Toledo (1:30 p.m.) and host school Mercer (6 p.m.) that Friday, followed by Toledo (10 a.m.) and Mercer (12:30 p.m.) again Saturday.
The Panthers then travel to Florida Atlantic March 4-6 for the FAU Parents Weekend Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla. Pitt plays two games Thursday, including Kentucky (1 p.m.) and host school FAU (6 p.m.). Friday, Pitt goes head-to-head with Florida International at 3:30 p.m., and rounds out the tournament Saturday against Illinois State at 10 a.m.
Pitt's lone non-conference home contest comes Tuesday, April 20 against Akron at 6 p.m.
"This schedule is competitive; we're facing some top of the top programs, coached by some of the best" said Hermanek. "We're going to be leaning into some great freshmen talents, the success and experience of our vets and new key transfers. As a squad, we know what we want to be known for; fighters, well prepared and unified strengths."
Schedule Notes
The Panthers ended the 2020 season 8-12 overall and 2-6 in the ACC before the season was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
At this time, no fans are allowed inside Vartabedian Field due to the ongoing pandemic. Updates on this nature will be provided on Pitt's athletic website and social media.
