Pitt to Play 10 League Matches
PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh volleyball team will play 10 matches against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents in the spring of 2021, head coach Dan Fisher announced Thursday.
The matches will count in addition to the team's fall 2020 record, as the Panthers work toward qualification for the 2020 NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship.
In November the NCAA Division I Council approved a package of proposals to move 2020 fall championships to the spring of 2021. Omaha, Neb., is the finals site of the 2020 women's volleyball championship, scheduled for April 22-24, with a 48-team bracket. Thirty-two of the teams will be automatic qualifiers, with 16 at-large selections. The normal bracket size for the championship is 64 teams. Regular-season play will span from Jan. 22-April 3, with selections April 4. The ACC's determination of the automatic qualifiers for fall sports is yet to be finalized.
The league's spring format features three teams playing at one host site per weekend.
The Panthers will begin their spring campaign at home with matches against Virginia (March 6) and Georgia Tech (March 8) at Fitzgerald Field House.
Pitt will be on the road for the next two weeks, traveling to Winston-Salem, N.C., for matches against host Wake Forest (March 12) and NC State (March 13), followed by a trip to Durham, N.C., to face Miami (March 20) and Duke (March 21).
Florida State (March 26) and North Carolina (March 28) will visit Pittsburgh next, before the Panthers end their spring slate in Clemson, S.C., against the Tigers (April 1) and Virginia Tech (April 2).
Pitt has the option to add up to four non-conference opponents during spring regular season play, which may be announced later.
