Panthers to Play Eight Matches
PITTSBURGH – The three-time defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion University of Pittsburgh volleyball team announced an eight-match fall schedule Friday morning.
The announcement follows the ACC's previous release on plans for football and fall Olympic Sports on July 29 and applies with enhanced health and safety protocols of the ACC's Medical Advisory Report.
Over five weeks, beginning Sept. 25-27, each ACC volleyball team will play its four region opponents twice.
Pitt will begin its fall season with a trip to Syracuse, N.Y., facing the Orange Sept. 25 and 26.
Next, the Panthers will host Boston College Oct. 9 and 10 at Fitzgerald Field House.
The following weekend, Pitt will travel to Notre Dame, Ind., to take on the Fighting Irish Oct. 16 and 18.
To complete their fall slate, the Panthers will return to Pittsburgh to host Louisville Oct. 23 and 25.
Pitt returns two senior AVCA All-Americans in 2019 ACC Player of the Year Kayla Lund and All-ACC First Team selection Chinaza Ndee, who will serve as co-captains. The pair combined for 43.2 percent of Pitt's kill output in 2019.
AVCA All-Region setter Lexis Akeo is back for her sophomore campaign, in addition to redshirt senior Kylee Levers, following her recovery from a season-ending ACL injury in 2019. Sabrina Starks returns in the middle for the Panthers after averaging 1.44 blocks per set in 2019, good for a top 10 national ranking.
New faces on Pitt's 2020 roster include incoming rookie outside hitter Cat Flood out of Wilmette, Ill., as well as 2019 AVCA Two-Year College National Player of the Year Jordan Lockwood and two-time Southern Conference Libero of the Year Marija Popovic, a senior transfer from ETSU.
The University of Pittsburgh was recently informed that fans will not be able to attend the Panthers' matches at Fitzgerald Field House during the month of September. Pitt is working in concert with health officials and colleagues across the country regarding the possible accommodation of fans for home games after September.
The league's leadership, and its medical advisory group, will continue to meet on a weekly basis to share information and discuss medical issues related to the ACC's return to play. Should any future adjustments be necessary, the ACC Board of Directors will do so at the appropriate time.
Broadcast selections via the ACC's television partners are in progress and once finalized will be reflected on theACC.com.
The ACC Network is available through the following video providers: Altice, AT&T, Charter/Spectrum, Cox Cable, DIRECTV, DISH, Google Fiber, Hulu Live TV, Optimum, PlayStation Vue, Sling, Verizon Fios, Vidgo and YouTube TV, among others.
