PITTSBURGH – University of Pittsburgh track and field and cross country head coach Alonzo Webb has tabbed Tevin Hester as assistant coach for the Panthers sprints squads, as announced on Wednesday afternoon. Hester will work closely with the Pitt sprinters after spending the past three seasons at ACC foe Clemson, his alma mater.
"We are thrilled to have someone as decorated an athlete as Coach Hester," stated Webb. "He has competed at such a high level in the NCAA and on the professional level. He had tremendous success in the ACC and as a nine-time NCAA All-American, he will be credible enough to "talk the talk, because he has walked the walk."
Hester comes to Pitt after three seasons at Clemson as a volunteer assistant coach for the Tigers track & field program. During his three years at Clemson, Hester was a key member of the sprints staff that saw nine student-athletes earn Second Team All-American honors and 10 student-athletes earn First Team All-ACC honors. Hester helped the Clemson 4x400m relay squad collect the ACC title in 2019 while also seeing Rebekah Smith collect the Penn Relays 100m Championship of America title in 2018 under his guidance.
In total, Hester helped coach a pair of NCAA qualifiers in Rebekah Smith (60m) and Marcus Parker (200m) while also coaching two USA U23 NACAC Gold Medalists and one USA U23 NACAC Silver Medalist.
As a student-athlete at Clemson, Hester cemented himself as one of the greats for the Tigers as he earned All-America honors nine times which are third most in program history. He also collected a total of seven ACC individual titles (four outdoor, three indoor) in the 60m, 100m and 200m while being named All-ACC 12 times and earning ACC Indoor Freshman of the Year honors in 2013.
The talented sprinter qualified for the NCAA's in a total of four events during his illustrious Clemson career while also being named 2016 USTFCCCA Southeast Region Men's Track Athlete of the Year and two-time ACC Most Outstanding Performer. Hester also collected a gold medal at the 2013 Pan American Junior Championships (4x100m) and a silver medal at the 2013 USA Junior Championships (100m).
He currently still ranks inside the top-10 in four events in Clemson program history as he ranks second in the outdoor 200m (20.13), third in the indoor 60m (6.56), fourth in the indoor 200m (20.71) and fifth in the outdoor 100m (10.05).
"Being a former multiple ACC champion, Coach Hester understands what it takes to be successful and will bring that same knowledge and passion to help our athletes succeed. In the past three seasons in his role at Clemson, he has helped develop some of the top sprinters in the ACC and nationally and his plan is to do the same at Pitt. We welcome Coach Hester and look forward to seeing him elevate our sprint program to championships heights."
Hester earned his bachelor's degree in sports management from Clemson University in 2016, where he was a four-year member of the Tigers track & field program and team captain.
Tabbed as one of the up and coming young sprint coaches in the nation by Kentucky assistant coach Tim Hall, Hester will join Coach Webb's staff for the upcoming season and will inherit a talented group of sprinters that will look to make big strides under his tutelage.
