PITTSBURGH—Pitt redshirt freshman quarterback Joey Yellen, who joined the Panthers in January following his transfer from Arizona State, has been granted immediate eligibility from the NCAA.
"This is outstanding news for Joey and our entire program," Coach Pat Narduzzi said. "He's been such a great addition, on and off the field, for us. We're thrilled for him and his family. We are all very grateful for our compliance staff's excellent work throughout this process."
"I'm very happy to have received this news from the NCAA, and I appreciate them making this decision on my situation," Yellen said. "I am excited to be able to be available for my team this season and look forward to helping out any way I can."
As a freshman at Arizona State, Yellen played in one contest, preserving a redshirt. His lone appearance was a Nov. 9 starting assignment against USC. Yellen completed 64% of his passes (28 of 44) for 292 yards and four touchdowns with two interceptions in a 31-26 setback to the Trojans. He posted those impressive numbers despite suffering a shoulder injury early in the contest.
As a two-year starter at Mission Viejo (Calif.) High School, Yellen compiled a 22-3 record (.880) while completing 61% of his passes (360 of 595) for 6,131 yards and 57 touchdowns against just 14 interceptions.
As a senior, he completed 227-of-351 passes (65%) for 3,516 yards and 27 touchdowns, earning an invitation to the prestigious Under Armour All-American Game.
The Panthers today held their sixth practice of training camp, which opened on August 7.
