PITTSBURGH – Pitt Athletics, in collaboration with several departments of the University of Pittsburgh, partnered with Forever Collectibles [FOCO] on a bulk order of Pitt-branded masks for students, faculty, staff and visitors.
"Leaders across the University were eager to join Athletics in showing our school pride by wearing these Pitt-branded masks in support of public health guidance for the control of COVID-19 and in support of Pitt's on-going development of a COVID-19 vaccine," said Jay Frerotte, Assistant Vice-Chancellor, Environmental Health and Safety.
With the order of nearly 140,000 masks, FOCO pledged a $15,000 donation to the University of Pittsburgh's Center for Vaccine Research (CVR), which is working to create a vaccine for the virus that causes the disease COVID-19.
"As we all continue to work through COVID-19 guidance on precautionary measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, specifically, the recommended precautions to wear cloth face coverings in public settings, it made sense for Pitt Athletics to collaborate with the entire campus community," said Deputy Athletic Director Christian Spears. "Because of our campus efforts this enabled us to redirect royalties from the use of Pitt marks and logos to the Center for Vaccine Research. In a small way wearing these Pitt-branded masks can now connect us all to the critical vaccine research happening here at Pitt through the Center for Vaccine Research."
Pitt is also selling the masks online through ShopPittPanthers.com with FOCO donating 24% of each sale to the CVR. Masks are also available through foco.com.
The leaders of Pitt Athletics assembled the ultimate lineup of impactful teammates to support the University of Pittsburgh's Center for Vaccine Research in May as the families of head football coach Pat Narduzzi, head men's basketball coach Jeff Capel, head women's basketball coach Lance White and director of athletics Heather Lyke made a combined $500,000 lead donation to CVR. They were then joined by the city's three major professional sports franchises—the Penguins of the National Hockey League (NHL), the Pirates of Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Steelers of the National Football League (NFL)—which each donated $100,000.
