PITTSBURGH—University of Pittsburgh rising junior defensive tackle Jaylen Twyman was named to the 2020 Walter Camp Preseason All-America Team as a first-team selection, it was announced Thursday.
Twyman exploded onto the scene in 2019 with a sensational sophomore season, starting all 13 games for the Panthers and compiling 41 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and 10.5 sacks. He was the first defensive tackle to lead Pitt in sacks since Aaron Donald (11) in 2013.
The Washington, D.C. native changed his number to 97 last season for personal motivation and to honor Donald, who has gone on to become the NFL's most dominant defensive lineman since his historic, award-winning senior season with the Panthers in 2013.
For his efforts last year, Twyman was named a consensus second-team All-American and also garnered first-team All-ACC honors after playing a huge role in Pitt leading the nation in team sacks (3.92/game).
Twyman established himself early in the 2019 campaign, earning Outland Trophy National Defensive Player of the Month for September after recording 3.0 sacks vs. Ohio, 1.5 sacks at Penn State and a solo sack in the thrilling victory against UCF. The defensive tackle continued that form all season, tallying sacks in eight different games, including 2.5 sacks in an overtime win over North Carolina.
Twyman's decision to return to Pitt in 2020 is one of several reasons why the Panthers project to have one of the most disruptive and talented defenses in college football this season.
Pitt returns seven starters from its 2019 defense that ranked in the nation's top 35 in no fewer than eight categories, including tackles for loss (ninth, 7.9/game), rushing defense (12th, 108.5 yards/game) and total defense (15th, 312.9 yards/game).
Safety Paris Ford, safety Damar Hamlin and defensive end Patrick Jones II are right alongside Twyman as extremely viable All-America and national award candidates for this upcoming season.
Pitt also returns experience at cornerback in the form of Damarri Mathis and Jason Pinnock, while the linebacker corps features multiple-year letterwinners Cam Bright, Phil Campbell III and Chase Pine.
Additionally, with the pass-rushing duo of Rashad Weaver and Keyshon Camp returning from injury, the Panthers have no shortage of proven veterans on defense.
