PITTSBURGH – Lorri Johnson, a star forward and all-time leading scorer for the Pitt women's basketball team from 1987-91, has passed away. She was 51.
"One of my greatest memories at Pitt so far was standing next to Lorri Johnson as her jersey was retired, followed by her induction into the Pitt Athletics Hall of Fame," said Director of Athletics Heather Lyke. "Lorri's joy on those occasions is something I'll always remember, and Pitt fans who watched her play will remember how breathtaking she was on the basketball court. We extend our deepest sympathies to the Johnson family and the many people who loved Lorri and called her a friend and teammate. She will always be considered one of Pitt's finest."
Johnson dazzled Pitt basketball fans from 1987-91 as she ended her amazing Pitt career as the all-time leading scorer in men's and women's basketball history with 2,312 career points. On Jan. 13, 2019, Johnson saw her famous No. 24 jersey raised into the rafters inside the Petersen Events Center as she became the first women's basketball player to have her jersey retired.
A 2019 Pitt Hall of Fame inductee, Johnson was known for her uncanny ability to score the basketball, Johnson earned All-America honors during her senior campaign in 1991 and closed out her career being named to the All-Big East team three times.
The New Castle, PA native led the Panthers in scoring in each of her four seasons while finishing out her outstanding Pitt career with the highest career scoring average (20.5 ppg) of any player in program history. During the 1988-89 campaign, Johnson posted the school record for points scored by a sophomore as she netted 667 points. The 667 points is also the third most points scored in a season by a Pitt player.
She still holds the school record for points in a game (45) and field goals made in a season (266). Johnson was the most talented scorer in Pitt basketball history and posted her school record 45 points against Kent State on Dec. 18, 1990, a game the Panthers won 111-97. Not only could she score the basketball, the athletic forward also ranks eighth in program history with 908 career rebounds while leading the Panthers in rebounding three times during her career.
"Lorri Johnson is one of the Pitt greats that set the bar for women's basketball at Pitt," said Head Coach Lance White. "As the first women's basketball player to have her number retired she will always be the example of what present and future Panthers should aspire to become. Our condolences go out to her family and her legacy will live on forever."
