LOS ANGELES – The University of Pittsburgh softball team defeated San Diego, 2-1, and fell to fourth-ranked UCLA 4-0 Saturday morning in day three of the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament.
After a scoreless first in game one against San Diego, senior Walker Barbee hit a single through the left side in the bottom of the second, scoring sophomore Sarah Seamans to put Pitt up 1-0.
Junior LoLo Sanchez kept her hot bat alive, driving in classmate Katlyn Pavlick with a single off the right field wall. Earlier in the game, Sanchez hit an opposite field triple down the left field line, but was thrown out at the plate trying to stretch it for a homerun.
San Diego cut into the Pitt lead as Madison Casiano hit an RBI single to left (2-1), but junior Brittany Knight forced the next batter to groundout to short to end the inning. In the final frame, Knight shut down the Toreros in order to earn her second complete game and second win in as many days.
In seven innings, Knight recorded three strikeouts while giving up six hits and one earned run.
In game two, UCLA jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a two run homerun in the bottom of the first. Freshman Becca Miller, making her first career start, retired the side in innings two, three and four to keep the Bruins at bay. In the bottom of the fifth, UCLA put two more on the board with a homerun to center, making it a 4-0 ballgame.
Miller pitched a complete game, giving up three hits and four earned runs.
Both Pavlick and Sanchez tallied three hits and triples on the day, with Sanchez hitting an RBI. Barbee finished the day 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Seamans went 1-for-4 with a run.
Pitt concludes the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament Sunday morning as it takes on UCLA at 12 p.m. EST.
