LOS ANGELES – The University of Pittsburgh softball team defeated CSU Bakersfield, 5-1, and fell to Cal Poly 9-8 in eight innings at the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament Friday evening.

After two scoreless innings, Pitt increased its lead in the bottom half of the fourth as Pavlick reached on an error, allowing junior Chandler Walter to score. Junior LoLo Sanchez recorded her first RBI as a Panther, as she legged out a grounder to first to score freshman Kayla Lane and put Pitt up 3-0. CSU Bakersfield scored one run in the top of the seventh, but Pitt limited the damage. Junior Brittany Knight recorded a complete game with six strikeouts, eight hits and one earned run to begin the 2020 campaign 1-0.
In game two, Cal Poly opened up the scoring with three in the first. Pitt answered with a solo shot from senior and California native Kaitlyn Kruger in the top of the second to make it a 3-1 contest. The Mustangs answered with a two run homerun of their own (5-1) in the bottom of the third, but Levesque smacked a two run homerun over the left field wall in the top of the fourth, making it a two run affair (5-3).
The Panthers took a 6-5 lead in the fourth, courtesy of a Batesole double and an inside-the-park homerun from Pavlick. In the sixth, Pitt added two more runs to its total as Seamans singled in a run and Kruger earned an RBI via sac fly, going ahead 8-5 into the bottom of the sixth.
Cal Poly cut into the lead with a run in the bottom half of the sixth and entered the bottom of the seventh down 8-6. With runners on second and third and two outs, Mustang Sydney Frankenberger drove in two runs to tie it up at eight all and force the game into extras.
Sanchez reached third with one out in the top of the eighth, but the Panthers couldn't capitalize. Cal Poly's Shelby Jeffries hit a deep fly to right, enough to bring the game winning run home for the Mustangs.
Sanchez went 4-for-6 with two hits, an RBI and two runs for the day. Kruger went a perfect 3-for-3 with a homerun, two singles and two RBIs against Cal Poly, while Pavlick had two hits, two runs and an RBI for the day.
