CHAPEL HILL – The University of Pittsburgh softball team fell to North Carolina, 7-2, in game two of the three-game weekend series Saturday afternoon.
Pitt fell to 6-8 overall and 1-1 in ACC play, while UNC improved to 7-11 and 1-1 in conference action.
The Panthers and Tar Heels kept each other scoreless through the first four innings with a pitcher's duel between freshman Becca Miller and Hannah George. In the bottom of the fifth, UNC's Destiny Middleton broke the scoreless game with a sac fly to right, bringing in a run and giving the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead.
In the next at bat, Abby Settlemyre singled to second base, driving in a run. Junior LoLo Sanchez dove to her right to keep the ball in the infield, but was unable to get the runner out at first as the Tar Heels took a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth, sophomore Katlyn Pavlick reached on an error. Junior Hunter Levesque took advantage of the miscue and hit a two run home run to centerfield, knotting it up at two.
In the bottom of the sixth, North Carolina scored five runs on three hits, including a bases clearing triple to left field to take a 7-2 lead. The Panthers loaded the bases in the top of the seventh, but a groundout to first ended the game.
Levesque finished 1-for-3 with a run and two RBIs. Seniors Alexee Haynes and Connor McGaffic each tallied a single, while senior Kaitlyn Kruger hit her fifth double of the season.
Miller pitched 4.2 innings, giving up six hits, two earned runs and striking out two. Redshirt junior Brittany Knight took the loss, allowing five earned and three hits over 1.1 innings.
Pitt is back on the field tomorrow at 12 p.m. to conclude the ACC series against the Tar Heels. The game will be broadcasted on the ACCNX.
