GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Pitt softball team fell to East Carolina, 9-1, Sunday morning in the final day of the Pirate Invitational.
Pitt fell to 5-7 overall, while ECU improved to 7-5.
Junior Hunter Levesque took the first pitch of the game to left field with a single and senior Kaitlyn Kruger singled to right, but the Panthers stranded both runners to end the top of the first.
ECU's Logyn Estes opened the scoring with a two-run homerun to left centerfield in the bottom of the second. One inning later, Estes hit a three-run homerun to the same spot in left centerfield, increasing the Pirates' lead 5-0.
ECU added two more in the bottom of the fourth with an opposite field homer to right field (7-0) and a solo a homerun to center, making it an 8-0 ballgame. The Pirates tacked on one more (9-0) with a double down the right field line.
In the top of the fifth, freshman Hope Alley reached base on an error and advanced to second after senior Walker Barbee moved her over. Freshman Taegen Lewellen hit a single up the middle, recording the first RBI of her career by bringing in Alley (9-1).
The Panthers are back on the field Friday, February 28 and open conference play against North Carolina. Friday's game begins at 6 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday's games begin at 1 p.m. and 12 p.m., respectively.
