SANFORD, Fla. – Pitt baseball (6-1) defeated Eastern Michigan (1-5) 3-2 Sunday afternoon at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium to earn its first series sweep of the season. Starting pitcher Matt Gilbertson (1-0) threw seven shutout innings, allowing seven hits and no walks with four strikeouts.
Pitt got on the board first in the fourth inning. Samuel Frontino led off with a double to left field and scored on a single down the right field line by Bryce Hulett.
The Panthers doubled their lead in the next inning. David Yanni singled through the right side with one out, and Kyle Hess singled to left field with two outs. Frontino doubled again, dropping a ball on the right field line to bring home Yanni.
What proved to be the game-winning run was produced in the eighth inning. Hulett led off with a walk, went to second base on a wild pitch and advanced on a fly out to centerfield by Riley Wash. After Sky Duff drew a walk, Hulett was tagged out on a squeeze bunt by Jordan Anderson. After Nico Popa was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Yanni drew a walk to allow Duff to jog home for the run.
The Eagles scored all two runs in the last inning and had the tying run on second base with two outs. Adam Bloebaum came in from the bullpen and produced a fly out to Hess in left field to garner his first collegiate save.
