Gymnastics, Baseball Student-Athletes Honored
PITTSBURGH – Alecia Petrikis of gymnastics and Ron Washington Jr. of baseball were named the Office Depot Student-Athletes of the Week following impressive performances in their respective sports.
Petrikis picked up individual titles on both events in which she competed Saturday afternoon to help lead Pitt gymnastics to a tri-meet win against Towson and Yale. She led off with a 9.850 on vault, and closed with a career-best 9.900 on floor exercise. Her wins marked her third of the year on vault and her first on floor. Her 9.900 floor score is a team-best this season.
Washington Jr. led the way for Panthers at the plate, where the team put up 36 runs in four games to go 3-1 on Opening Weekend. The Houston, Texas, native had a 1.427 OPS, going 7-17 with a team-high eight RBI's and two homers and hits in all four games. He delivered the game-winning hit against Indiana State with a two-run homer and followed it up with a double and two walks. He collected three more hits against Saint Joseph's, including a game-tying solo homer in the ninth inning that allowed the game to go to extra innings that the Panthers eventually won. In the Sunday finale against Iowa, he came in clutch once again with a game-winning, three-RBI double to centerfield in the eighth inning.
Up next, Pitt gymnastics will host its final home meet of the 2020 season – Senior Night – against West Virginia Friday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. at Fitzgerald Field House. Tickets are available at PittsburghPanthers.com or by calling the Panthers Ticket Office at 800-643-PITT (7488).
Pitt baseball will travel to Sanford, Fla., for a three-game series against Eastern Michigan Friday through Sunday.
