Five Takeaways from Allen Greene on Pitt Beyond the Script

Pitt Athletic Director Allen Greene sat down with Jason Earle for the debut episode of Pitt Beyond the Script, covering everything from NIL strategy to a marquee basketball game heading downtown. Here are five of the biggest moments.
1. Greene's Message to Fans: Show Up, No Matter the Opponent
Historically, attendance for football games has spiked for big-name matchups and dipped otherwise. Greene urges fans to treat every Saturday as one worth showing up for regardless of opponent.
It's about more than wins and losses. He pointed to the affordability of college sports as a rare chance for Pittsburgh families to make lasting memories — a high-five with a player, a game-day giveaway — moments a kid never forgets.
"Fans, I want to see you show up to see Pitt play," Greene said. "Doesn't matter who we're playing against, just show up. You're going to have a great time, you're going to enjoy yourselves, and most importantly, you're going to represent the city of Pittsburgh."
2. A Redesigned Fan Experience at Acrisure Stadium
Fans can expect a different atmosphere at football games this season. Greene said the department made a deliberate call to reduce stadium capacity and consolidate fans into the lower bowl, aiming for a tighter, louder crowd.
To explain the thinking, Greene reached for a youth-sports comparison: scattered parents at a travel ball game quietly cheer for their own kid, but packed together, one person's energy becomes contagious. He believes the same principle applies at Acrisure Stadium, and teased night games with added production to match.
"If we can have everybody closer together, it'll be a more enjoyable experience for our athletes," Greene said. "I think our guys are going to play better because of that."

3. NIL and Eligibility Reform: "No Silver Bullet," But Progress
Greene was candid about the chaos of college athletics, acknowledging the industry moved fast without guardrails and things escalated quickly once the door opened. He didn't dodge the uncomfortable parts either — pointing to former pros re-entering college ranks to cash in, calling it something that runs counter to what college athletics is supposed to be.
Still, he sees the NCAA's 5-in-5 ruling as a step in the right direction, even if imperfect. It's a mindset that carried into Pitt's new H2P NIL initiative, which formalizes partnerships with regional businesses to fund above-the-cap NIL deals. Greene framed it less as a transaction and more as a civic investment in Pittsburgh's future workforce.
"There's no silver bullet," Greene said. "But can we kind of get back to center and get more grounded to what college athletics is supposed to be? If we can get some guardrails into this industry to help these young people grow and develop, that's a good spot for us to be in."
4. Men's Basketball vs. West Virginia Moves to PPG Paints Arena
Pitt's men's basketball rivalry game against West Virginia — normally called the Backyard Brawl — is part of the Backyard Basketball Classic at PPG Paints Arena. Greene admitted he wasn't keen on the idea of moving the idea initially.
But as Pitt men's basketball's NIL and roster budgets climbed, the math started making sense. The neutral-site doubleheader lets both fan bases — and two additional teams — fill a bigger downtown venue just a mile and a half from campus, while generating above-the-cap NIL revenue to help fund the basketball roste
"I did not think it was smart of us to take a marquee home game to a different venue," Greene said. "But it allowed us to be able to generate some above the cap and NIL dollars to help fund our basketball roster, which was really important to us. It allows us to engage in the regional business community. …So taking a game down to PPG Paints Arena is something that checks a lot of boxes, not every box, but a lot of boxes and enough for us to think that this was a good idea."
5. Behind the Scenes of Pitt's Retooled Men's Basketball Roster
Greene gave a candid look at how this year's near-total roster overhaul came together. After a difficult season, he described telling coach Jeff Capel that the team simply needed a whole new roster. Capel and new general manager Jay Kuntz ran with that mandate, aggressively pursuing transfer targets well beyond what Greene initially expected
That aggression came with real financial tension, as the staff made real-time budget adjustments chasing the talent Kuntz kept identifying. Despite the scramble, Greene said he's been impressed watching the new group work out together and is looking forward to seeing them on the court this winter.
"I like the way that they play together," Greene said. "I like their athleticism. We can shoot the lights out, so really the challenge will be familiarity and just getting reps up and down the court. They're a great group of kids who are going to represent us well and certainly look forward to cheering them on come this winter."
