PITTSBURGH – Despite scoring a season-high 79 points, the Pitt women's basketball team (2-1, 0-0 ACC) closed out their non-conference slate with an 85-79 loss to Delaware on Sunday night. Junior Jayla Everett netted a team-high 20 points and four assists in the loss for Pitt.
"Obviously, I am really disappointed in the loss," said head coach Lance White. "I think that was a game that we should have won. You turn it over 24 times and they get 25 points off of that and you can't compete."
Everett led the Panthers in scoring for the third straight game Sunday as she netted a team-best 20 points while connecting on four three-pointers and adding a season-best four assists in the loss. Rita Igbokwe had her best game of the season in the loss as she notched her second career double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds in 19 minutes of work.
After a slow start offensively, the Panthers were able to tie the game, 6-6, just over four minutes in as Everett knocked down her first triple of the game. The Blue Hens responded with a quick 8-2 spurt to take the 14-8 lead but Gabbie Green stopped that run with her first three-pointer of the game from the corner. After Cynthia Ezeja finished off a layup to cut the Pitt deficit to three, 16-13, Delaware got hot offensively and ended the quarter on a 8-2 run to take the 24-15 lead into the second quarter.
The visitors were able to gain their biggest lead of the game, 29-19, just over two minutes into the second quarter as Paris McBride knocked down a triple from the wing. The Panthers were able to respond over the next three minutes to cut the deficit to just one, 31-30, as Destiny Strother knocked down a triple and Green scored five straight points. Pitt wouldn't get any closer down the stretch of the first half as they headed to the locker room trailing for the first time this season, 40-37.
The Panthers came out of the locker room strong as Green netted a triple and Igbokwe finished off back-to-back layups to tie things up, 44-44, just over two minutes into the third quarter. The Panthers gained their first lead of the game as Brown hit a free throw and Everett knocked down a jumper to make it 47-44 at the media timeout. Out of the timeout, Pitt was able to secure their biggest lead of the game, 53-46, as Ezeja finished off a layup after a great feed from Everett but Pitt wasn't able to hold onto the lead as Delaware scored the final four points of the quarter to send it to the final 10 minutes tied, 62-62.
The fourth quarter turned into a back-and-forth battle as Everett opened the scoring with a triple to give Pitt the three-point lead but the Blue Hens responded right away with a triple of their own to tie it back up. The visitors took the 70-67 lead with just over five minutes to play but Igbokwe finished off a layup and Dayshanette Harris sank a pair of free throws to give Pitt the 73-72 lead. The Panthers had no answer for McBride down the stretch as she netted six points including a pair of late free throws to secure the 85-79 road victory for Delaware.
Green finished off her strong game with 13 points while also knocking down a season-best three triples while Harris finished her game with 11 points, six rebounds and three assists in the loss. Amber Brown had an efficient night for Pitt as she netted seven points, a team-high 11 rebounds and three assists across 33 minutes of work while Ezeja had a career-high seven points and four rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench.
