PITTSBURGH – The Blue Team edged out the Gold Team, 219-209, in the Pitt Swimming and Diving Blue-Gold meet Friday afternoon at Trees Pool. Pitt held the meet for preparation for the upcoming 2020-21 season.
"We had some freshmen perform really well, including Javier [Zorzano] and Marcin [Goraj] from the men's side and Sophie [Yendell] on the women's side," said head coach John Hargis. "All of them being freshmen and not knowing what to expect in somewhat the first meet, I know they were excited and to see them race the way they did was fun to watch."
"I thought all in all on both sides the kids competed, for the first time in about six months, and it was fun to see them do that. In terms of going to Notre Dame next week, we still have to clean up some things and get a lot better but all in all it was fun to race and we saw a lot of good things out of them."
"Getting back on a block and racing was what we wanted. For them to do this before we head to Notre Dame is what we wanted to do. To get an overview training wise and to see them in a racing format is something you don't see often in a practice setting."
Diving kicked off the festivities for the friendly intra-squad meet. Combining the platform and 3-meter events in addition to the 1-meter, Dylan Reed had the top score in both events for the men, while Jackson Salisbury came in second.
On the women's side, Amy Read led the way with the top score in each event. Claire McDaniels was second in the 1-meter while Serena Buchwald was behind Read in the combined 3-meter and platform event.
"What I thought was really good for us is that we competed in the 3-meter platform event to see where we are as we head into the start of the season," said diving head coach Katie Hazelton.
"What is really exciting is we have depth. We know Amy and Serena are some of the top divers in the ACC, and to see Claire in the mix with them is really exciting. To have a freshman challenge them in both the 1-meter and 3-meter shows we look really strong going into the season."
"As far as the guys, it was great to see them perform today. We have depth there too, and because there is a lot of depth, they are pushing each other to get better and better both on the men's and women's side. I believe this team is the start of something special and I am really excited. They train hard, their culture is good, they support each other and they want to be really good and I think the sky is the limit for them."
Both the women and men saw newcomers shine in their first meet as a Panther. Freshman Javier Zorzano turned in the top-time in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke and 200-individual medley. Freshman Marcin Goraj recorded the top time in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke
Junior Madison Nalls claimed the top time in two events, the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle. Senior Kathleen Lynch took the 100-yard backstroke event.
Sophomore Daisy Anderson won three different events, the 200-yard butterfly, 200-yard backstroke and 200-individual medley, while freshman Anneliese Hohm won the 200-yard breaststroke.
