
No. 10 Pitt Falls to No. 6 Louisville, 3-1, in Fall Finale

Panthers Complete Fall Season Sunday Night
PITTSBURGH – Senior captain outside hitter Kayla Lund led the No. 10 Pitt volleyball team (4-4, 4-4 ACC) with her fourth double-double as the Panthers completed their fall campaign with a 3-1 loss to No. 6 Louisville (5-2, 5-2 ACC) Sunday afternoon at Fitzgerald Field House.
After Pitt swept the Cardinals in the first meeting Friday night, Louisville responded with a win Sunday by scores of 26-24, 25-22, 22-25, 25-23. The loss was Pitt's first at Fitzgerald Field House since Oct. 22, 2017, snapping a streak of 37 wins at the facility.
The contest completed an eight-match fall season for the Panthers, in which they faced four other ACC teams. Pitt's was the toughest of the three pods, with four of the five teams picked in the Top 6 of the ACC Preseason Coaches Poll.
Lund led Pitt with 19 kills on .204 hitting and added 13 digs. Sophomore setter Lexis Akeo produced her third double-double of the short season with a season-best 41 assists to go along with 11 digs.
Senior right side Chinaza Ndee had 17 kills for Pitt on .375 hitting. Classmate Marija Popovic posted 18 digs while sophomore Chiamaka Nwokolo contributed five blocks.
Pitt struggled to hold off Louisville's hot offense, as the Cardinals out-hit the Panthers, .240 to .233. The Panthers had more kills (58-53), assists (56-51), service aces (5-4) and digs (62-43). Louisville had more blocks (13.0-8.0). Pitt was plagued by attacking errors, with 24 on the night.
Set One: No. 6 Louisville 26, No. 10 Pitt 24
The first frame went point-for-point until Louisville earned a largest lead of three, up 15-12. The Panthers tied the set at 16 after a 4-1 run that included back-to-back Lund kills. Pitt took a 20-18 run after a 3-0 run, with consecutive kills by Ndee. However, Louisville tied the score at 23 and 24 before ending the first set with an ace and a block to win in extra points, 26-24. Lund had a match-best five kills in the set.
Set Two: No. 6 Louisville 25, No. 10 Pitt 22
The Cardinals secured momentum early with a 4-1 run to secure a 12-6 lead. Late in the set, Pitt was able to cut the margin to one point with a 5-1 run capped by an Ndee ace, still trailing 22-21. Louisville sealed its 2-0 lead in the match by finishing the second frame with a 3-1 run.
Set Three: No. 10 Pitt 25, No. 6 Louisville 22
Pitt opened the set in a big way with an 8-0 run to gain a 12-4 lead. However, Louisville responded by outscoring the Panthers 10-4 to cut the margin to two, 19-17, and finally at one, 21-20. Pitt held on to win, 25-22, forcing a fourth set.
Set Four: No. 6 Louisville 25, No. 10 Pitt 23
It was another close set, with 11 ties and six lead changes. The Panthers earned a 12-9 advantage following a 4-1 run, but Louisville responded to take an 18-14 lead after outscoring Pitt 9-2. A 4-0 surge that included back-to-back kills from Lund put Pitt ahead by one, 21-20, but a 4-0 run brought up match point for Louisville (24-21). The Panthers fought through two match points but it was not enough as Pitt fell, 25-23, and 3-1 in the match.
